St. Mary's Community Hospital Conducts Eye Screening and Reading Glasses Distribution Outreach at Pamagochi Main Mosque

Magochi, Malawi – June 2026

St. Mary's Community Hospital, in partnership with the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM), successfully conducted an eye screening and reading glasses distribution outreach program at Pamagochi Main Mosque, Mangochi. The initiative was made possible through the generous support of the Africa Clear Sight Partnership, which provided reading glasses and financial assistance to facilitate the outreach activities.

The outreach aimed to improve access to basic eye care services and address the growing need for vision support among community members, particularly adults experiencing difficulties with near vision due to age-related changes. Many individuals often struggle to read, write, conduct business activities, or perform daily tasks because of uncorrected vision problems.

During the event, qualified healthcare personnel from St. Mary's Community Hospital conducted comprehensive eye screenings for community members. Participants received vision assessments and counseling on eye health. Individuals diagnosed with presbyopia and other non-complex vision conditions were provided with appropriate reading glasses at no cost.

The outreach attracted a significant number of community members from Pamagochi Mosque and surrounding areas, demonstrating the demand for accessible eye care services. Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the reading glasses would greatly improve their ability to read religious materials, perform household activities, conduct business, and maintain their independence in daily life.

Speaking during the outreach, representatives from St. Mary's Community Hospital emphasized the importance of preventive and community-based healthcare services. They highlighted that good vision is essential for education, productivity, and overall quality of life and reaffirmed the hospital's commitment to bringing healthcare services closer to underserved communities.

St. Mary's Community Hospital extends its sincere gratitude to the Africa Clear Sight Partnership for the provision of reading glasses and financial support, and to the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) for its continued collaboration in strengthening healthcare delivery. Appreciation is also extended to the leadership of Pamagochi Main Mosque and community members for their cooperation and participation, which contributed to the success of the outreach program.

The hospital remains committed to promoting eye health and improving access to quality healthcare services through community outreach initiatives that positively impact the lives of the people it serves.
